Slowly, but surely, I'm getting closer to the release of THE FAERIE RING! Copy edits arrived on Friday (yes, New Years Eve - no rest for the wicked, you know....) but I was excited to dig into the story again.
For those of you who are new to the publication process (like me), copy edits are the step where a copy editor has gone through the entire manuscript and made corrections to grammar, spelling, punctuation, (apparently I need training in the correct use of commas) phrasing etc.
For instance, THE FAERIE RING is historical fantasy. The setting is London 1871, and even though there is a fantasy aspect (faeries in the story) the setting is accurate to the period: London in the late 19th century. So, the copy editor pointed out words that sounded anachronistic and kept the timeline straight from the beginning to the end of the book. It was fun and HELPFUL to read the notes.
Additionally, this was my last chance to make any substantial changes to the manuscript. So I corrected phrasings, or changed parts to make them read smoother. Some character names had changed so those got corrected.
And the best part: I shipped the marked up pages back to my editor this morning!
So, the next step will be for my manuscript to be sent to design for markup. After that, the designed manuscript goes to production to have a comp produced. The next step that I will see will be first pass pages, (in about a month, I think...) which will be my book laid out as it will look in its finished form.
How exciting is that?!
