A fine list from the good people at Empire Magazine charting the very best in independent American cinema. From modern classics like Reservoir Dogs and The Blair Witch Project, to obscure cult classics like Evil Dead 2 and Eraserhead, independent movies have often been the most daring and intriguing films on offer thanks to the greater freedom of expression offered to independent directors. Away from the shackles of the major studios filmmakers can really develop a movie to their own personal specifications, taking much greater risks than they might otherwise be able to. It may not have the funding or the CGI budget of the major studios, but nevertheless the independent film industry has still given us a whole host of memorable big screen moments.
In the midst of another summer dominated by sequels and superheroes, it's a timely reminder of the great potential that lurks in Hollywood's cinematic shadows.
