Rock-a-Doodle Review

My Rating: 3/10- Boring and lifeless.

Rock-a-Doodle is truly in the top 25 worst films list for me. Prepare for the worst movie goers. This film will not interest you throughout and offers nothing more than dull action, barely enough to keep kids satisfied. This must be Don Bluth’s worst. The film has a run time of about 65 minutes, and that must have been because they ran out of funds. I thought I’d give my childhood a re-visit to this film that I haven’t seen in something like 8 years. I have my regrets. Well for as short a film it is, it drags on to the length of Lord of the Rings. Except Lord of the Rings are brilliant films, and are enjoyable.

The Plot:

I can’t stand the story and characters of this film. We open with a go-happy song after a little bit of narration from the voice actor Phil Harris. You will recognise his voice if you have seen The Jungle Book. This shows that Bluth must have still had connections from Disney studios, as The Jungle book is a Disney film (For those that don’t know Bluth used to work with Disney before 1987). Well anyway, we get the big song from the rooster, Chanticleer and one day someone stops him from crowing go to bring the sun up. The sun comes up without him and he is heartbroken. He fleas to the big city and years later his friends come looking or him with the help of a little kitten (which is actually a little boy). So the film follows the pack trying to find Chanticleer and along the way we meet some uninteresting characters.

the Grand Duke (Left) with his nephew.

Terrible Characters:

Goldie Pheasant: There’s just something annoying about her. She barely has any screen time and we learn nothing really of the character. Goldie is voiced by Ellen Greene, and it is clear that the voice acting is straight out of her appearance in the 1986 musical The Little shop of horrors; which I might add was a great film. She is made to keep chanticleer busy and pretend to love him, in order to distract him from his friends finding him by Pinky. She actually falls in love with him eventually.

Pinkie: Pinkie is the fat load of a manager who controls the career of Goldie and Chanticleer. Not much to say about him.

Goldie with Chanticleer.
Edmond: Edmon is meant to be our main character, who is transformed into a kitty. He soon fades off as a side character when the others are introduced.

Most of the characters in this are boring. But I thought that the Grand duke’s nephew was pretty funny.

Goldie with Chanticleer again.

Overview:

The story of the film was talked about during the 1930’s at Disney but was rejected. Well it looks like someone wanted to bring the Chanticleer story to life and did he make a mess of it. To sum it up it is a horrible film. It has lively animation, but boring characters, a short story and boring songs. Rock-a-Doodle is a story about a rooster, and truly is a ‘Foul’ film!
