Amidst the cinematic hubbub of the Cannes Film Festival, news has trickled out regarding the plot of the upcoming sequel to Sly Stallone's disappointing action behemoth The Expendables.
The good people over at Den of Geek quoted the film's Cannes press release as saying the following (Big Fat SPOILER ALERT):
"The Expendables are back and this time it's personal! After Tool (Mickey Rourke), the heart and soul of the Expendables, is brutally murdered on a mission, his comrades swear to avenge him. They're not the only ones who want blood. Tool's beautiful young and wild daughter Fiona embarks on her own revenge mission, complicating matters when she is captured and ransomed by a ruthless dictator plotting to destroy a resistance movement. Now Barney (Sylvester Stallone) and the Expendables must risk everything to save her and humanity."
Beautiful, young and wild lady in peril?.....check. Ruthless Dictator?....check. Barney and his pals risking everything to save her?.....check. Hmmm, this is oddly similar to the first Expendables storyline, I can't see it being much different. HOLD ON......what's that last bit again? "To save her AND HUMANITY." Oh my days, business just picked up folks.
Yes, Sly, Stath, Dolph and the rest are once again taking down a tyrant and rescuing a hot young babe in the process, but this time, they are also saving the entirety of mankind as well. I'm not totally convinced they will manage to save humanity. Not unless 'humanity' is the name of a stripper also kidnapped and being helped ransom, but there we go.
The rumour mill is in full flow and is suggesting that Jean-Claude Van Damme is signed up for the ride this time around, though this is yet to be confirmed. With or without the muscles from Brussels though, we can expect plenty of ass-kicking and explosions from Sly and the gang, one can only hope they settle on a tone this time and keep the whole affair as tongue-in-cheek as possible.
