4 Best Free Alternatives To Microsoft PowerPoint

1. Google Docs Presentation

alternatives to powerpoint

My favorite alternative when it comes to replacing Microsoft applications is usually Google. You may already be familiar with Google Docs, but did you know you can create presentations with the web-based app? Just click on the Create new drop down menu and select Presentation to get started.

free powerpoint alternative

As you might imagine, this online application is very simple to use. You can change the theme and background of your presentation, insert text boxes, images, and videos, import slides, and all that good stuff. And since you’re using Google Docs, you can share your presentation with others and work on it collaboratively.

2. SlideRocket

like powerpoint but free

SlideRocket is a higher end model of a collaborative, web-based presentation application. While this is a premium app, they do offer a nice free option, which gives you 250 MB of storage (15 MB file size), up to 5 multi-seat accounts, shared folders, items, and libraries, and the ability to import from Powerpoint and export to PDF.

We covered SlideRocket in an article 2 years ago and it has only got better since then. It has a beautiful user interface and a lot of great features, including the ability to add themes, layouts, shapes, charts, tables, pictures, audio, video, and Flash animations. You can also integrate content from sites like Flickr and YouTube, as well as utilize plug-ins.

To get a glimpse of SlideRocket, check out this short video:

3. 280 Slides

like powerpoint but free

280 Slides is another very easy to use presentation creation app. Last covered back in March of ’09, 280 Slides offers a host of great features, like the ability to upload your existing PowerPoint presentations and import them into 280 Slides, preventing you from having to start over.

Other great features include autosave and recovery, storing presentations online, downloading them in the PowerPoint 2007 format, adding photos and movies from Flickr and YouTube, posting to SlideShare and embedding, and running them straight from your browser.

4. Prezi

alternatives to powerpoint

Prezi, if you haven’t heard of it by now, is one of those really cool presentation applications that is very different from how PowerPoint and the rest function. What makes it significantly different is the fact that it doesn’t invoke the traditional slide-by-slide rules of a normal presentation. Rather, each presentation you create is a flowing, motion-based depiction filled with your creativity.

13 Free Backup Software

This is a list of free backup software packages, most of them are open source software.

Zmanda Recovery Manager is a perl-based utility used to automate backup and recovery of MySQL databases. It is released under the GNU General Public License.

Before choosing a backup software, you need to check the features of each program.
AMANDA

AMANDA, the Advanced Maryland Automatic Network Disk Archiver, is a backup solution that allows the IT administrator to set up a single master backup server to back up multiple hosts over network to tape drives/changers or disks or optical media. Amanda uses native utilities and formats (e.g. dump and/or GNU tar) and can back up a large number of servers and workstations running multiple versions of Linux or Unix. Amanda uses a native Windows client to back up Microsoft Windows desktops and servers.

Areca Backup is an Open Source personal backup solution which is released under the General Public License (GPL) v2.
It basically allows you to select a set of files / directories to back-up, choose where and how (as a simple file copy, as a zip archive, ...) they will be stored, and configure post-backup actions (like sending backup reports by email or launching custom shell scripts)

BackupPC
BackupPC is a high-performance, enterprise-grade system for backing up Linux, WinXX and MacOSX PCs and laptops to a server's disk. BackupPC is highly configurable and easy to install and maintain.

Bacula
Bacula is a set of Open Source, enterprise ready, computer programs that permit you (or the system administrator) to manage backup, recovery, and verification of computer data across a network of computers of different kinds. Bacula is relatively easy to use and efficient, while offering many advanced storage management features that make it easy to find and recover lost or damaged files. In technical terms, it is an Open Source, enterprise ready, network based backup program.

Clonezilla
You're probably familiar with the popular proprietary commercial package Norton Ghost®. The problem with these kind of software packages is that it takes a lot of time to massively clone systems to many computers. You've probably also heard of Symantec's solution to this problem, Symantec Ghost Corporate Edition® with multicasting. Well, now there is an OpenSource clone system (OCS) solution called Clonezilla with unicasting and multicasting!

Comodo Backup
Provides a safe storage space for your data. You can backup documents and media, upload data files and programs, run applications directly from Online Storage space using Online Drive.

Create Synchronicity
Create Synchronicity is a powerful and lightweight open source backup and synchronization program, available in many languages. (What can it do?)Create Synchronicity is especially light: zipped, it weights about 150kB (that's 20 times less than an average MP3 file). It makes the backup process extremely easy, while remainining fully customizable.

DeltaCopy
In general terms, DeltaCopy is an open source, fast incremental backup program. Let's say you have to backup one file that is 500 MB every night. A normal file copy would copy the entire file even if a few bytes have changed. DeltaCopy, on the other hand, would only copy the part of file that has actually been modified. This reduces the data transfer to just a small fraction of 500 MB saving time and network bandwidth.

DirSync Pro
DirSync Pro (Directory Synchronize Pro) is a small, but powerful utility for file and folder synchronization. DirSync Pro can be used to synchronize the content of one or many folders recursively.Using DirSync Pro you can make incremental backups. In this way you'll spare lots of time because you don't have to copy all the files each time you want to update your backup; only new/modified/larger files would be copied.

duplicity
Duplicity backs directories by producing encrypted tar-format volumes and uploading them to a remote or local file server. Because duplicity uses librsync, the incremental archives are space efficient and only record the parts of files that have changed since the last backup. Because duplicity uses GnuPG to encrypt and/or sign these archives, they will be safe from spying and/or modification by the server.

FlyBack
Apple's Time Machine is a great feature in their OS, and Linux has almost all of the required technology already built in to recreate it. This is a simple GUI to make it easy to use.

Kleo Bare Metal Backup
With Kleo, you can now create all inclusive backups of your customers servers. Saves 100s of hours tracking down original CD’s or obsolete device drives. Kleo enables you to recover from server failure without the need of any other software.Comes with the Carroll-Net Server Recovery Kit. It includes hundreds of specialized server recovery tools. With it you can rescue failed servers, recover lost passwords and troubleshoot boot up problems.

Zmanda

Zmanda Recovery Manager is a perl-based utility used to automate backup and recovery of MySQL databases. It is released under the GNU General Public License.

Top 10 free Chrome Web Store apps

Chrome Web Store

Take a look at our top 10 free apps from the Chrome Web Store.

It’s been less than a week, but already the Chrome Web Store is reeling in the users. The app store has over 500 applications and plenty of free ones to choose from. Here is our first look at the Chrome Web Store and our choice of the top 10 free applications.

Graphic.ly

Graphic.ly

This digital comic book platform is great for diehard fanboys and occasional readers alike. Graphic.ly features over 700 titles, optional registration, and plenty of free content. Users also have access to in-depth previews for all non-free material. It’s got a rich user interface that immediately loads your content, and gives you viewing options inside the comic. The Graphic.ly Flow view digitally imitates actual reading habits, zooming into and highlighting the upper right hand corner and panning from frame to frame.

Vimeo Couch Mode

Vimeo

There’s nothing revolutionary about Vimeo Couch Mode, but it streams your video content and does it well. There are no ads or commercials, and it includes free, staff-picked content in addition to your videos and inbox. The plug-in also gives users the “like this” and “watch later” options on the toolbar.

Word2

Word

There are only a few things wrong with Scrabble: Waiting for your turn can be interminable when an opponent takes 30 minutes to find the perfect place to play “C-A-T,” and there are only so many places on a board. Word2 eliminates both of these issues. It’s a never-ending, global edition of Scrabble that allows you to continuously focus on your own letters, never being forced to wait your turn. People play simultaneously and you can search on for that perfect space on the limitless board. It’s competition without pressure, and fun that doesn’t require absolute focus.

Scribble

Scribble

Scribble describes itself as “stickies on steroids,” so you can imagine how it’s an organizer’s dream. Each scribble is a different color, includes a title, and short memo to yourself. You’re then free to drag and drop them in any order you prefer, and naturally are able to access the notes offline and will receive notifcations. It absolutely beats 15 identical and randomly titled Word documents on your desktop.

Aviary Advanced Image Editor

Aviary

Aviary has a host of photo editors and manipulators, but its Advanced Image Editor appeals to the widest demographic. While obviously not as sophisticated as PhotoShop, it provides all of the basic tools Adobe’s photo editor does. You have your filters, layers, levels, and simple tools, like image rotation and cropping. It’s comparable to free photo editors like PicNik and Gimp, and arguably easier to use.

Amazon Windowshop

Windowshop

This Web Store App originally premiered at theChrome December 7 event, and it caught our eye back then. Now that we’ve have more of a chance to play with it, the app easily makes our top ten free list. There’s just something about being able to tangibly pull and prod your way through the retail site that really sells it, and the tabs at the top of the page add some distinction to the products you’re looking at. Amazon also strictly features its bestsellers here, something that’s incredibly helpful for paring down the infinite abyss its site can sometimes feel like.

TweetDeck

TweetdeckTweetDeck has already claimed top spot in the Chrome Web Store, and for good reason.  It’s already a popular app for the iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad, and Android devices, and now that list is a little longer. As per usual, TweetDeck combines your social networking accounts into columns and groups so display your ever-updating online life. It also lets you update your multiple profiles in one easy message. Nothing terribly new or exciting here, just a great way to multitask.

Gilt

Gilt

The Gilt app has made a name for itself when it comes to mobile shopping, and its Web Store version is no slouch either. It shows you daily sales by a category you prefer, and then slides out what that designer has available. It also keeps your searches open, so that if you originally began looking at women’s jewelry but also need to look through home décor, a panel is simply added to your browsers, eliminating the endlessness of clicking back to find an item.

Good Noows

GoodNoows

There are plenty of news apps in the Chrome Web Store, but Good Noows has a Facebook-like UI that simply generates the news you want from the sources you like. It slaps articles up based on your customizations, and then lets you edit font, text size, and layout. Of course, you can share anything you want as well or flag it to read later. There’s nothing flashy about it, but that seems to make it even quicker to get the headlines you want from the sources you prefer.

That Music App

ThatMusicApp

This app simply lets you browse its community’s playlists or create your own. It generates music content by letting you pull from YouTube videos in an iTunes-like interface. It’s more visually appealing than Grooveshark’s app, which may have a larger database to pull from, but isn’t quite as fun to play around with as this feature.
